One of the great attributes of Surfer Magazines storied history has been the artistic mélange of advertising that have graced the pages thru the years. There have been some great ad campaigns that many of us remember as much as the editorial content. These timeless marketing tools have been creative, insightful, and the reason for our lifestyle. We pick our clothes, surfboards and accessories from these ads with our lives mirroring what these companies are selling. Some of these priceless jewels are true works of art in themselves.

In 1991 I had the privilege of working under the tutelage of then publisher, Steve Pezman at Surfer Publishing. Pez, as many called him, had an inspiration for an art project based on the history of the advertising at Surfer, which spanned the era from 1960 thru 1969. Steve's idea was to showcase these ads by presenting them as an art show. He honored me by laying the idea out and asking if I would help put it together. I was stoked!
