The next direction…

Awesome, wicked, unreal! These are just a few descriptions of the kite surfing “hot-spot” not too many of the sport’s enthusiasts know about, which in a way is a good thing. No, we are not talking about Brazil, or Europe, not even Australia, but looking at the geographic location, here we are getting close. The place is none other than the Land of the Unexpected as it is known to people, who have experienced this positively crazy country. To others it is more commonly referred to as Papua New Guinea…

Powers of Three: Heart, Soul and Insanity on Ireland's West Coast

For most of us, when we think of big and heavy, the intense breaks of California, South Western Australia, Hawaii and Tahiti immediately come to mind. However, there is a small group of people who never choose the easy way. People, that big and heavy conjures images of a different sort. A kind of place where most would dare not go, to ride waves that others dare not surf.

Does the wind blow the same when you're upside down?

Kite surfing. The popularity of this sport is growing at the speed of light across all continents of the world. Most people, who get a glimpse of someone skimming across the surface or flying over the water at that moment dream of doing it too. Whether they actually make it happen is a different story, but… So the question is why? Simplicity!

Surfing in the Land of the Unexpected

When we think about fantastic surf spots in the world usually the first thing that comes to mind are Hawaii, Australia, Mexico, California and Portugal. But there is another location on the surf map, undiscovered, unpredictable, un-spoilt, beautiful and exotic. This destination is perfect for the European surfer staring out the window of his apartment, office or car at the cloudy, grey sky and cold, wintery conditions. This location, a hidden getaway, distant and remote, will surprise even the most skeptical with challenging waves breaking of scenic beaches, reefs and points without the crowds. Few know of this place, travel agencies rarely offer this direction that is why it is a surfer’s dream! The place in mind – Papua New Guinea…

War and Peace on the Cape Peninsula

A while back I was in South Africa, sunk deep in the heart of the African surf scene, and wondering to myself, why do we surf? Besides the rush that feeds the thrill-seeker, why do we surf? What is it about the water, the waves, the vastness of the ocean that affects us when we get out on our boards? I come full circle in this piece, seeing it first as a battle for empowerment in which one struggles to conquer a natural force to viewing surfing as a communion with the waves…

The Prodigal Board

I can still remember the first time that something was stolen from me, it was in first grade. My red mechanical pencil; a souvenir from a family trip to Texas vanished from my pencil box. I tried to rationalize it, figure out who could do such a thing.

Matafesto - The Delicate Wind

Watching from the point at Rincon you notice a solo rider lying face down, flying like gangbusters, zipping along the face of a wave going faster then anything you have ever seen. The rider is carving hard, linking up his off-the- bottom, off-the-top turns and generating an amazing amount of speed. It looks like he’s on a track of some kind. While not a stand up surfer, not a boogie boarder, jet skier, not a bird or a plane the prone rider is moving at an accelerated speed almost Serpentine in movement. But what is it he is riding?
